Ohio's GOP candidates warned of turnout problem in November

Reacting to poor poll numbers for Republican candidates in his state of Ohio, a tea party activist says the GOP is failing to excite and motivate its base to get voters to the polls.

In Ohio's special election for a U.S. Senate seat, a Fox News poll shows Democrat Sherrod Brown, the former senator, is eight points ahead of his opponent. That opponent is Sen. John Husted, who was appointed to fill the seat left vacant by Vice President JD Vance.

In polling at Real Clear Politics, Husted (pictured in AP photo below) is faring a little better: Brown is just over a half-point ahead of Husted when RCP averages five separate polls. In three of the five polls, Husted has a single-digit lead.

Tom Zawistowski leads We the People Convention. He told AFN that Sen. Husted and the gubernatorial candidate, Vivek Ramaswamy, are failing to “distinguish themselves” from their Democrat opponents in their respective races.

“And so it's basically a dead heat,” he advised, “because no one is all that motivated about any of them.”

Ramaswamy is facing physician Amy Acton in a closely watched race to replace Ohio’s term-limited governor, Mike DeWine.

DeWine enjoyed a landslide victory in 2022 to win a second term, winning 62%, but RCP polling shows a dead heat between Ramaswamy and Acton.

The biggest problem for the Republican candidates in November will be turnout, Zawistowski warned, because conservatives are unhappy right now.

“They're not going to vote for Amy Acton. They know she's terrible,” he said. “But the problem is they're talking about not voting at all.”
