The Department of Homeland Security had issued a memo calling for the immediate suspension of all enforcement and removal operations utilizing traffic stops initiated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
The policy change came after an ICE officer shot and killed a Colombian driver Monday in Maine and a week after one shot and killed a motorist in Houston, giving more fuel to the fire from leftists who criticize any effort to deal with the illegal alien problem.
Hundreds of people in Maine protested Tuesday over the fatal shooting of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 25-year-old Colombian national.
But now the White House has confirmed to AFN, that President Trump has overturned the suspension of those traffic stops.
Ira Mehlman is media director for the Federation for American Immigration Reform.
"The president does recognize that ICE is out there keeping the American public safe. We've seen countless examples of the failure to enforce immigration laws resulting in the tragedies to Americans, people being murdered by illegal aliens. ICE is doing its job, and they're going to continue to do it.”
ICE as an agency continues its own self-evaluation.
“Obviously, the department has said it's going to review certain things, but the core mission remains the same, to keep the American people safe."
Mehlman says despite hysteria from the left, polling does tell us that the American public wants immigration laws enforced.
“They do recognize the harm that it causes to the country, and in some instances, the tragic results of not enforcing the laws. So, it's hard to know what each individual person is thinking, but based on polling, enforcing our immigration laws is something that has broad support in the country."
