Massie, who currently represents Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, is a lame duck congressman who has been decisively defeated in May’s Republican primary by a candidate endorsed by President Donald Trump, Ed Gallrein.
NPR reports Massie has decided to take aim at the president's secretary of war, Pete Hegseth, calling for his impeachment over the war in Iran. According to him, Hegseth waged the war illegally and defied an order from Congress to withdraw, causing unnecessary civilian casualties.
He read the articles of impeachment to the House on Tuesday.
Now House Speaker Mike Johnson put the brakes on Massie by sending lawmakers home for the midterms.
Gary Bauer is the chairman of the Campaign for Working Families, and he grew up in Massie's congressional district.
“Mr. Massie is an embarrassment, and I think it's very telling that the Republican voters of his own district rejected him in a primary,” Bauer says
What does Massie spend his time on, Bauer asks, in the waning days in office?
“Trying to do what Democrats are doing by trumping up impeachment charges, this time against the secretary of war, Pete Hegseth. I feel sorry for him that he thinks this is something he would want to be remembered for, and I can't wait till the Massie era is over,” Bauer states.
Bauer has an idea as to why Massie is going after Hegseth, rather than the president.
“There's talk about him and some others getting together and creating some sort of third party. Maybe things were said if he attacks Trump now that that third party won't go anywhere, but just think of the idea of playing around with a third party,” Bauer says. “That would guarantee that socialist Islamist Democrats would win every election.”
According to NPR, Republicans have enough votes to defeat the proposal in theory. However, the Iran war is becoming more unpopular with Americans, and this will be a hard vote in competitive election districts.
The House had until Thursday to act on the proposal. Now an impeachment vote won't come until after the midterm elections.
