President Donald Trump has already made it clear that he “won't put up with” Janeese Lewis George (featured bottom right) winning the Washington, D.C. mayor race.
According to Politico, George is expected to be on a collision course with Trump in the final years of his presidency. She easily coasted to victory in the recent Democrat primary and faces no major challenger in November, putting her on course to take over from Muriel Bowser next year.
Bowser is the current Democrat mayor of Washington, D.C., who has been in office since 2015. After serving three terms for over a decade, she announced last November that she was not running for reelection, despite the office having no term limits, reported Politico.
George was up 18.2 percentage points from her closest contender Kenyan McDuffie, who conceded the race and claimed to congratulate her on the win.
Throughout her campaign, George claimed to be a candidate that will stand and fight against Trump. The president responded to her possibly becoming mayor by stating not only would he be against it, but suggesting the nation’s capital be run federally.
Phil Bell is an ambassador for the Project 21 Black Leadership Network who lives in the Washington, D.C. area.
"What she's proposing, which is number one, is starting to end Washington's cooperation on immigration and also, as far as policing is concerned with the federal government, basically intimating that she will fight President Trump at every turn, even though she has said that she wants to work with the administration,” says Bell. “We generally know that if there's anything to expect, that is somewhat disingenuous."
He supports the idea of the U.S. Congress taking control of the capital city.
"I believe that is very much a possibility. I would like to see a permanent federal takeover, and it be managed by the Congress so that it's managed for all of the people, because this is part of everybody in America, as opposed to just those who live here, as is the case in every other state," Bell says.
