Cea Weaver was appointed January 1st to head the Mayor's Office to Protect Tenants.
Videos and deleted posts show Weaver criticizing home ownership as rooted in white supremacy and advocating property as a collective good.
Jeff Stier, a longtime Manhattan resident and advisor to The Heartland Institute, says no one should be surprised. Mamdani is a Democratic Socialist, and Weaver was a tenant organizer with Housing Justice for All and Democratic Socialists of America.
"There are a lot of people who did not vote for this mayor who are going to be worried about his policies and about his choices for leaders," adds Stier. "Just a couple weeks ago, another high-level appointee of his actually resigned after it became public that she made a number of antisemitic tweets."
Catherine Almonte Da Costa resigned in December after antisemitic and anti-police social media posts she made between 2011 and 2012 resurfaced.
The posts, which included derogatory remarks such as “money hungry Jews smh” and referred to NYPD officers as “piggies,” were highlighted by the Anti-Defamation League, prompting public backlash.
Stier adds that Mamdani also got rid of a directive from former Mayor Eric Adams (D-NYC) to protect synagogues from protestors.
"It will be interesting to see how this plays out (with Weaver) because when it came to the antisemitic comments, Da Costa was forced to resign," says Stier about Cea Weaver. "Will this administrator also be forced to resign? I fear not because she was appointed to do what the democratic socialist mayor was quite clear he wants to do."
Stier says it reminds him of late Mayor Ed Koch (D-NYC).
"The iconic former New York City mayor was quoted as saying after he lost his last election, ‘the people of New York voted me out of office, and now they must be punished for it,’" says Stier. "Well, the people of New York voted for Mayor Mamdani, and now maybe they'll be punished for it."
