A political activist predicts a Republican primary race for Mississippi’s lieutenant governor will be the big story today in The Magnolia State.

On the GOP ballot, incumbent Delbert Hosemann is seeking re-election to a second term but is being challenged by state Sen. Chris McDaniel.

Jameson Taylor, director of policy and legislative affairs at AFA Action, says McDaniel is rated as a “Verified Conservative” according to iVoter Guide. Hosemann is rated a “Moderate.”

“The lieutenant governor is the most powerful person in the state of Mississippi,” Taylor explains, “and a lot of that power comes from appointing chairmen of committees.”

Hosemann has been criticized for appointing Democrats to lead several key Senate committees, and Taylor blames that decision on legislation, such as a pro-life bill, that died in committee.

A third candidate, educator Tiffany Longino, could help force the race to a runoff later this month. She is also a “Moderate” in the race.
