Alabama Republicans to Tuberville: 'We've got your back'

Tommy Tuberville got a strong vote of confidence from his home state over the weekend.

The executive committee of the Alabama Republican Party passed a resolution with 99% that condemns President Joe Biden and supports Senator Tuberville (R-Alabama) in his ongoing fight against military use of taxpayer money to fund paid leave and travel expenses related to abortion.

In response to the new policy enacted by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Tuberville used his position on the Senate Armed Services Committee to begin placing "holds" on confirmation hearings for Department of Defense promotions.

Tuberville can't actually prevent promotion hearings, but it forces Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) to commit valuable Senate floor time to consider each promotion individually instead of grouping them together for rubber-stamp approval. Schumer has been unwilling to commit that time while he, Austin, Biden and other Democratic leaders have criticized Tuberville.

"The Alabama Republican Party calls on the Biden administration to reverse the policy of using taxpayer money to fund abortion-related expenses against the will of the people and thanks Senator Tommy Tuberville for his stand against this flawed policy," the resolution states.

"The bottom line is the Alabama Republican Party is incredibly concerned about what's happening in Washington, DC, with these holds," Alabama GOP chairman John Wahl said on Washington Watch Monday.

Biden ignores facts, protocol, Hyde Amendment

"When we look at it, this goes back not necessarily to Tommy Tuberville, but the root cause here is President Biden has forgotten the key facts constitutionally and really proper protocol for government," Wahl told show host Jody Hice. "He's ignored the Hyde Amendment. He's gone around the proper channels put in place. Constitutional federal spending should be decided by the legislative branch, not the executive branch."

A Knights of Columbus/Marist poll shows that 60% of Americans favor the return of abortion decisions to the states as provided by the overturning of Roe v. Wade last summer.

Wahl said the Alabama GOP has received positive feedback from citizens for Tuberville's continued stance.

"For us, this is a clear thing," said Wahl. "It's not just protecting the lives of the unborn which is probably the most important issue that you have. What do other rights and freedoms matter if you don't have the basic right to life? That's number one.

"Outside of that, this is a clear, fiscally responsible action. The vast majority of Americans do not want their taxpayer funding being used to pay for abortion-related expenses."

As reported last week by AFN, more than 5,000 veterans have written Senator Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-Kentucky) declaring they "firmly support Sen. Tuberville's position of holding civilian, general, and flag officers from confirmation by unanimous consent until the DOD rescinds its policy of subsidizing abortion."

The American Family Association has also begun a petition drive to allow people to show support for Tuberville and his stance against taxpayer dollars for abortion expenses for military personnel.
