Since Biden's disastrous debate with Donald Trump in June, the mainstream media has gone overboard trying to convince the American people not to believe their own eyes. Videos of a visibly declining Joe Biden were labeled "cheap fakes," and verbal gaffes were attributed to him being "overworked."
Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" handled it this way:
Brzezinski: "Claiming the videos are unedited and promise to keep posting them. And also, if something is unedited, it is one angle not showing the whole story."
Scarborough (in the background): "A lie … a lie … a lie…"
But after Biden made his weekend announcement on social media and it became impossible to hide a clearly compromised president, "Morning Joe" applauded the decision:
Scarborough: "We're commemorating here a remarkable act of political self-sacrifice by a man of great grace and a president of great consequence. His decision is one of the most remarkable acts of leadership in our history, an act of self-sacrifice that places him in the company of George Washington, who also stepped away from the presidency."
Nicholas Fondacaro of Media Research Center describes the media turnaround as "absolute whiplash" – and as proof the media is "basically going whichever way the Democratic winds are blowing." But he says while it looks like the mainstream media is contradicting itself, they're actually being very consistent: support the Democrats.
"Even the media knew that at some point something like this was going to happen," says Fondacaro. "[They knew] they would need to pivot to support whoever the Democrats were going to put up."
Writing for Newsbusters – an affiliate of MRC – Fondacaro quotes "The View" co-host Sunny Hostin saying Biden's timing of his announcement shows just how much of "a statesman [and patriot] he is" that he "can put his country before his ego."
