Judge Juan Merchan announced last week he is delaying Trump's sentencing until November 26, three weeks after the presidential election. The sentencing had been scheduled for Sept. 18, which is about seven weeks before Election Day.
Merchan, who has family ties to Democrats and the Democratic Party, wrote that he was postponing the sentencing "to avoid any appearance — however unwarranted — that the proceeding has been affected by or seeks to affect the approaching presidential election in which the Defendant is a candidate."
Jenna Ellis, a former attorney for Trump, says she noticed Merchan’s order mentions an “interest of justice” in delaying Trump's sentencing.
“And for once, I agree with him,” she tells AFN. "Because I don't think that the American people need to take into consideration a sentencing, in what was clearly a case that was meant to be political, less than 60 days out from a presidential election."
Postponing the sentencing removes a distraction for voters as Election Day approaches, she says. It also removes a “talking point” for Democrats, she adds, who are using their lawfare against Trump to label him a "convicted felon."
