With former NBA players Enes Kanter, Royce White and Larry Sanders announcing their WNBA draft declarations, seemingly mocking the fact that the league is unclear about what the "W" stands for, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert (pictured above) has sent an internal memo to teams addressing questions on transgender athlete participation and announcing that a task force of team presidents and general managers will meet to discuss the league's eligibility framework.
The league's labor agreement says "only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA," but it gives no further definition, which means the league is now having to consider the definition of a woman.
"The WNBA I guess stands for 'woke' now and not 'women,'" Ryan Helfenbein, vice president of communications at Liberty University, recently told American Family Radio.
"It is no longer about biological sex, except for when actual biological males not claiming to be transgender want to declare for the draft," he added.
That, Helfenbein said, has compelled the league to insert its "objective moral truth to this situation," failing to see reality.
"The WNBA wants to apply this sort of gnostic standard of reality: almost anyone can be a woman … except for basically a conservative biological male who is absolutely trying to call our bluff," Helfenbein observed.
He submitted that the declarations from these male players have broken the "charade" and made the WNBA "snap back to reality and … betray their own argument."
Kanter has spent years as an international human-rights activist and prospective political candidate, while White has actually run for the U.S. Senate twice as a Republican and has positioned himself within the Trump-aligned conservative movement.
Their WNBA declarations, therefore, come against a substantial backdrop of political activism.
Former NBA guard Ty Lawson has accused Sanders, who understands that saying he's a woman while playing makes him eligible for the WNBA, of making his announcement "to cause an argument or controversy."
