Looking for something to do this weekend? A national trade association for the firearms industry says the local gun range makes a good destination.

National Shooting Sports Foundation is encouraging gun enthusiasts to load your firearms and shoot some targets to celebrate “National Shooting Sports Month” during August.

Bill Brassard, a spokesman for the foundation, says 2023 marks the seventh year to recognize National Shooting Sports Month.

“It is a celebration of target shooting,” he says, “and it is also a reminder to, you know, get people out to the range, spend an enjoyable day at the range, with a friend or family member."

NSSF and the huge industry it represents also recognize the opportunity to introduce someone to shooting sports after sales records show millions became first-time gun owners in recent years.

Meanwhile, the shooting sports are a huge benefit to the economy through the sale of firearms and the excise taxes that go along with the sale of firearms and ammunition.

"Those benefit conservation and hunter education courses and just conservation in general," says Brassard. "So, really, when you are buying ammo or a firearm, you are really continuing to the preservation of habitat and wildlife across the country."
