OpenAI is an American artificial intelligence research company. Its website is a search engine that allows users to complete tasks and more using AI. Users can interact with ChatGPT using OpenAI.
The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, announced adult users will be able to access 'erotica' on the platform. It is part of their efforts to "treat adults like adults.” This was talked about on a podcast from the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, or NCOSE for short.
Tori Hirsch is legal counsel with NCOSE.
"I would just say to start off, we're not particularly surprised that this happened. It seems like tech companies and AI chat bots are racing to introduce erotic AI capabilities," says Hirsch.
She said that the problem NCOSE has with this is that AI capabilities often come without credible safeguards, especially as it relates to erotica.
"Also, we don't even know what erotica means in this situation. It hasn't been defined," says Hirsch.
She said that, at this point, ChatGPT does have a way to age-verify users to be able to distinguish between adults and children.
"Of course, they're saying that only adults are going to have access to this erotica ability on ChatGPT. But of course, there are also dangers for adults being able to have access to these types of conversations," says Hirsch.
She mentioned that people are having dangerous addictions to these chat bots.
"They're saying that it's just for adults, which means it's safe. We don't believe that at face value. There needs to be more restrictions in place to ensure that they're not engaging in creating or producing illegal child sexual abuse material or just other harmful conversations for adults as well as children," says Hirsch.
