Medicaid funding to abortion giant Planned Parenthood, as well as other abortion groups, resumed flowing to them beginning July 5. That’s because the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law on July 4 of last year, passed with only a one-year ban in place.
Now, organizations such as SBA Pro Life America are urging House and Senate members to pass a pass a reconciliation bill that "keeps Medicaid dollars out of the hands of big abortion businesses," especially Planned Parenthood.
Rather than a compromise with liberal or moderate Republicans, the one-year funding ban was required because Republicans in the Senate used the budget reconciliation process to pass the legislation.
If the public funding is not stopped by Congress, “I think it's fair to say that Planned Parenthood could be in an even better position financially than they were before they were defunded," Kelsey Pritchard, of SBA Pro-Life America, told AFN.
"Since they were defunded, 11 blue states have increased funding to Planned Parenthood,” she advised. “Those states represent a total of $202 million in supplemental funding that Planned Parenthood has received."
The refunding of Planned Parenthood also comes days after the anniversary of the landmark Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v Wade.
When the decision came down in 2022, pro-life activists were jubilant the famous abortion ruling got overturned by the right-leaning court, but the other side did not give up.
"The Dobbs victory did not solve the problem," said Pritchard. "If you look at the abortion numbers since Roe v. Wade fell, abortions are up in this country.”
