Love Life is the organization, and a House of Refuge is "simply a local, evangelical church that clearly communicates to their congregation how they will respond to an unplanned/crisis pregnancy and have a clear plan in place to care for those families – both within the church as well as those outside the church."
Shaylene Burlage of Love Life says more churches are needed, based on these types of conversations with pastors:
"Pastor, if someone facing an unplanned pregnancy comes to you, do you have a plan? They always smile and say 'Yes, we send them to Save-A-Life,' all pregnancy centers are Save-A-Life to pastors. But then I say, 'Well, that's great, please continue to do that, but how are you getting them back into your church for discipleship?' and that's where they look down and say, 'We're not.'"
Burlage knows what it's like to seek refuge from the Lord. She too had abortions and was a drug addict. Finally, a stranger gave her a flier that said "Call on Jesus, then call us." Burlage called on Jesus then got in touch with the organization, which also operated a Christian women's shelter.
Love Life also trains people to lead abortion recovery classes through what's called a Restored Life program. There’s more information at LoveLife.org.
"We have abortion recovery for women, abortion recovery for men, because they suffer the trauma too, whether they were involved or not, and then abortion recovery for family members who suffered the trauma of someone else's abortion. I absolutely recommend that."
