Even frozen, defunding provision is proving effective

A pro-life group that's tracking Planned Parenthood closures across the U.S. is excited about what's to come once abortion is officially defunded.

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America launched the new map when the One Big Beautiful Bill was passed by Congress and signed by President Trump on July 4th.

"We're up to 41 Planned Parenthoods that have closed or announced closure this year," Kelsey Pritchard tells AFN.

Planned Parenthood has said a "substantial number of their facilities" – up to 200 – could close based on the impact of the defunding provision in the One Big Beautiful Bill.

Though an activist judge has frozen that provision while a lawsuit against it plays out, Pritchard's pro-life group believes Trump's bill will prevail "over Planned Parenthood and over their attempt to thwart democracy and the lawmaking process in Washington, D.C."

"It's amazing that that law hasn't even taken effect yet, and yet, we are still seeing so many Planned Parenthoods that have closed or have said that they will close," Pritchard notes. "I think that's huge and just an indication of what's to come once this law is fully in effect."

The Hyde Amendment restricts the use of federal funds for abortion services, with exceptions, but as of June 2023, according to the group's 2023 and 2024 annual report, Planned Parenthood's U.S. division received $792 million in funding from government reimbursements and grants, which includes Medicaid.

This increase of over $100 million compared to the previous year represents about 39% of their revenue during that time period.

Planned Parenthood, which believes there is "constitutional right to abortion," has long maintained that abortions constitute a small percentage of the services they provide, but it has been the largest single provider of abortion for decades.

In the most recent reporting year (2022-2023), Planned Parenthood performed 402,230 abortions – a record high for the organization. It was a 2% increase from the previous year and a 23% increase since 2013.
