Women, pro-lifers urged to spread the news: Ignore Newsom

The Democratic governor of California – who many consider a possible presidential candidate for 2028 – says the women of his state should stock up on name-brand abortion drugs like mifepristone. But AFN spoke to two pro-life groups that strongly advise against the drug.

The abortion pill process involves two pills: mifepristone is taken first, followed by the drug known as misoprostol. Governor Gavin Newsom said Tuesday it's important to have a stockpile against what he called politically motivated abortion restrictions by the Trump administration. "[We need to] maintain uninterrupted access to medications at risk of shortage or political interference," he said.

Katie Glenn Daniel of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America thinks that's a bad idea. "The data shows that mifepristone has serious complications which can include causing the woman's death. So, women should take this extremely seriously," she tells AFN.

Gov. Newsom, Daniel argues, has shown numerous times he doesn't prioritize women's health or safety.

"This is not the first stunt from him," she explains. "He also put up billboards in my home state of Florida saying women need to fly to California for abortions – so, women's health and safety is not his top priority.

"Mifepristone is a very serious, dangerous drug – and women need to listen to anyone but Gavin Newsom when making critical decisions."

A recent study from the Ethics & Public Policy Center (EPPC) finds one in 10 women taking the abortion pill experience serious adverse events, including sepsis and hemorrhaging. At the same time, however, abortion supporters and online searches say mifepristone is as safe as Tylenol (see image below).

Carol Tobias of National Right to Life concurs with Daniel that the abortion pill is dangerous, that women should not be taking it – and that a state should not be stockpiling it.

"Anybody that's reading this information on mainstream media is going to get the line that the abortion pill is safe, [that] less than half of one percent have problems," Tobias warns. "But the studies that they refer to are all done by abortion advocates and abortion supporters."

She continues: "We need to make sure women – our neighbors and friends – understand how serious this abortion pill is. We have several lawsuits going on in states because a woman was given the abortion pill without her knowledge or consent. This is not something that should be handed out like aspirin or Tylenol."

"Gavin Newsom is absolutely ignoring the science when it comes to abortion drugs," adds Daniel. "Have you gone to the emergency room the last 20 times you took Tylenol?"

She recommends parents talk to their children about this, pointing to "other influences [that are] trying to push them towards these drugs," even in pro-life states.

"It's also all over the mainstream media, all over the Internet," she laments. "It's extremely important that people understand the threat [and start] talking to lawmakers to make sure that our taxpayer dollars are not going to these abortion businesses and their friends."
