DSA candidate avoids acknowledging Cuban dictatorship in CBS interview

A Cuban-born anti-communist activist says Florida's far-left Democrat candidate for Senate demonstrates that there is a lack of education when it comes to the history of the Cuban dictatorship.

Florida State Rep. Angie Nixon (D) trails incumbent Sen. Ashley Moody by more than six percentage points in a RealClearPolling average of U.S. Senate polls in Florida.

Nixon has recently stirred up controversy by bashing Moody and saying she wants to throw her in jail, Fox News reported. Moody's campaign easily called Nixon out, saying that is a "tactic straight from the Communist playbook."

Now, during an interview by CBS, she also may not have helped her cause as she was asked whether Cuba is a dictatorship.

"That is what people have told me, I have never been to Cuba, and so I will have to take their word for it," Nixon answered.

According to Miami Herald, Democrats jumped out in denouncing the Castro regime following her comments, partly because Florida is the state with the most Cuban exiles. Republicans have also taken this time to call out Nixon for her Communist support.

Nixon has become a member of the Democratic Socialist of America (DSA), which put out a statement commemorating Cuba's infamous Communist Dictator Fidel Castro. However, Nixon claims that she doesn't support all of the DSA's positions and that she's referred to Cuba as a dictatorship multiple times.

CBS News has taken down their post saying that Nixon declined to comment, saying it didn't accurately portray Nixon's views.

Fontova, Humberto Fontova

Humberto Fontova, who fled Cuba in 1961 and is the author of several books on the Castro regime, said it's just funny that she's making these comments in Florida.

"But I knew she was getting in trouble because you just don't do that. Even when you think that you kind of keep mum about that in South Florida because we're not talking theory down there. We're talking about people who actually lived it," Fontova says.

Unfortunately, Fontova says the Senate race could be a squeaker.

"The Berlin Wall fell in 1989, so about two generations have come up in this country that don't have a clue about what communism is because it certainly hasn't been taught in the schools," Fontova states. "They have no idea, and they are facing, for whatever reason, a tough job market right now, and so naturally, they just go to the alternative. They have never been taught what socialism is."

AFN reported recently that there are nine congressional DSA candidates that are on Tuesday's midterm election ballots.
