Ortiz: Online support for Paxton doesn't translate to tangible money

Texas will soon have a new senator as things continue to heat up between Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton.

According to RealClearPolling, Talarico is leading Paxton by 2.9 percentage points.

Over the weekend, Sen. Thom Tillis (R-North Caroline) blamed President Donald Trump's decision — to back the Texas attorney general over the state’s now outgoing senator, John Cornyn — for putting the Senate seat at risk for Republicans, reports The Hill. He also said the GOP would not be spending so much money in Texas if Cornyn had won the primary.

The Guardian notes the controversy between Cornyn and Trump, with Cornyn telling Republicans in the 2024 presidential campaign to move on from Trump and Trump firing back that Cornyn was “very disloyal.”

Ortiz, Tony (Current Revolt) Ortiz

Tony Ortiz of Current Revolt spoke on American Family Radio (AFR)’s “Jenna Ellis in the Morning” program, saying many didn’t anticipate the traction Talarico has been getting.

“Where's all the money, right? Something that James Talarico consistently brags about when he's out there campaigning is that he’s got a lot of small-time donors,” Ortiz states. “If you go online or you go to Facebook or wherever, there's this big like outlandish support for Senate candidate Ken Paxton, but yet, he still struggles to raise money.”

Pull back, he says, on Paxton’s online life and his real life.

“You go online and think that Ken Paxton is the best thing since sliced bread, but that doesn't translate to actual donations and tangible money for him to run with,” Ortiz says.

Matthew Williams, a writer and commentator, also spoke on AFR about Talarico’s advertising efforts on Paxton.

“I'll give Talarico a small slice of credit because every advertisement I have seen Talarico talk on the issues have nothing to do with his (Paxton) personal life, nothing to do with his background and nothing to do with his record outside of his votes in the statehouse,” Williams states.

Instead, it's all focused on accountability, fighting corruption and, most importantly, affordability, he says.

“That's just the breadwinning issue right now for a lot of voters because the ultimate polling indicator for a lot of people, of course, is going to be the price of groceries and the price of gas,” Williams says.
