With midterm elections under 60 days away, the first-ever midterm Republican convention is being held this week over two days, Wednesday and Thursday. The event site is the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
Midterm elections historically flip to the opposing political party, meaning Democrats would typically pick up seats and flip either the House or Senate in November.
Democrats currently have an average 5.7 percent lead over Republicans on the generic congressional ballot, according to RealClearPolitics.
President Donald Trump spoke to the convention goers Wednesday night, and Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to speak tonight.
Washington Times columnist Robert Knight told American Family News the convention is showing the political and ideological divide in politics.
“The Democrats are for trans kids. They're for men in women's sports. They're for an open border,” Knight told AFN.
Knight also pointed out the midterm elections have been turned upside down with a surge of self-described socialist candidates. Those candidates, many of them members of the Democratic Socialists of America, are pulling the already-liberal Democratic Party toward communism with a promise make everything free for the poor and punish the rich.
“They're promising to turn all of our health care over to the U.S. government,” Knight said. “They want free child care, free college. It's utterly destructive.”
The convention's warning about the Far Left was enough to upset liberal ABC News, according to the Media Research Center.
Reporting from the convention floor, correspondent Averi Harper complained the convention speakers are describing the Democratic Party as "radical and leftist," and pointing out the surge of socialist candidates.
Republicans should be exposing that radical agenda at the convention, Knight said, and also tell voters how the GOP is listening to them and has a plan to help make their lives better.
“I think they can chew gum and walk at the same time,” Knight said. “They can point out the Democrats' deep flaws while at the same time promoting a positive picture about where America needs to go."
