In a recent interview with Fox News, Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) Co-Chair Megan Romer called the U.S. Senate "an anachronistic institution" that was made to ensure the people did not have too much of a say.
"We want to expand the Congress significantly but make it a unicameral legislature," she stated.
In other words, the DSA wants a law-making body that has only one chamber or house that is expanded to include more socialists.
Sen. John Kennedy (R-Louisiana) later told Fox News it's "not a newsflash that the Graham Platner wing of the Democratic Party is in control."
At first glance, he said these new DSA politicians appear to be "the product of 50 years of high school civics being taught by football coaches," but the reality is "they're serious as an aneurysm.
"They want to kill all the millionaires, close all the prisons, open the borders, and defund the police, even though history has proven that socialism is for morons, and it's never worked anywhere," he continued.
"Don't take my word for it," Kennedy said. "Just look at Cuba and Argentina before changes there."
He also mentioned Venezuela, China, and the old USSR.
Across those cases, opponents often point to recurring problems like price controls leading to shortages, reduced incentives for innovation, low productivity in state-owned enterprises, bureaucratic inefficiency, difficulty allocating resources without market prices, limited consumer choice, and political concentration of power accompanying economic centralization.
Supporters of socialism often counter that these examples were affected by additional factors like international sanctions, colonial legacies, corruption, commodity price swings, or authoritarian governance. They argue those failures should not be viewed as definitive evidence against all forms of socialism.
"I notice that all of these neosocialists … don't wanna go live in a socialist country; they wanna live here," Kennedy said.
Though prominent Democratic voices are pushing back on the growing influence of the socialist candidates they say are ultimately going to hurt the party, Kennedy said the ideology is deeper and more entrenched in the Democratic Party than people realize.
He said socialists are currently concentrated in deep-blue jurisdictions and say things that would get them a psychiatric evaluation in the rest of the country. For the GOP to do well in the midterms, he advised them to stick to the "let them speak" game plan.
Though their crazed beliefs are great for the Republican Party, the senator also recognized it would be bad for America if the Democrats ultimately decide to back the socialists.
"If these people ever do get in charge, we might as well turn out the lights and make sure the cat's inside and go to bed, 'cause it's over,'" Kennedy warned.
