Republicans hope to flip the seat of retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
On Aug. 4, presumptive nominee Mike Rogers, who ran as the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate in Michigan in 2024, is expected to secure the GOP nomination and turn his attention to the general election.
As AFN recently noted, the Democratic primary pits Congresswoman Haley Stevens against Abdul El-Sayed, who has ties with radical Islam.
At this point, there is no clear favorite if the general election and the true swing state is between Rogers and El-Sayed. Most analysts would describe it as a highly competitive race, with a slight Republican edge in some forecasts but polling is conflicted.
A compilation of polls by Real Clear Polling, for example, shows El-Sayed opening with a solid lead and Rogers trailing both El-Sayed and Stevens by half a point.
Some say the eventual outcome will likely depend on voter turnout, the national political environment, and how each campaign performs after the Democratic primary, but Bill Johnson, founder and president of the Michigan-based American Decency Association, says it depends on election security.
"I think if we have a fair election, [Rogers] has a good chance of winning the election this time around," he tells AFN.
Since Donald Trump won the presidential election just a couple of years ago, Johnson says many people believe this is true in Michigan and other states that are marked by fraud.
"We believe Rogers lost because the [2024] election was not fair and straight," he says. "We think that there was some phony business going on in the background."
He is encouraged that President Trump is taking a strong interest in this race.
"The president is marking three different cities in the state of Michigan in terms of monitoring the vote tally, the vote process," Johnson reports.
Those cities are Detroit, Ann Arbor, and East Lansing.
