New Jersey's Democratic governor has admitted that about 6,600 people improperly registered to vote while obtaining driver's licenses and other state IDs in 2023 and 2024.
Gov. Sherrill, who took office this year, officially blames a Motor Vehicle Commission system software error but also claims a preliminary analysis showed that fewer than 400 of those who registered that way went on to cast ballots.
She has promised immediate action and has ordered that all erroneously added voter registrations from that period be removed.
"I am appalled by the reckless failures that allowed this to happen and the lack of transparency shown by those in charge at the time," she said in a statement.
But Washington Times columnist Robert Knight is not buying her outrage.
"This isn't just a glitch," he insists. "Democrats have no problem with illegals registering to vote. If they did, they'd support the SAVE America Act, which is stalled in the U.S. Senate right now. It's opposed by the entire Democratic leadership."
So, he doubts Sherrill sincerely wants to fix the problem.
"When Gov. Sherrill says … she's shocked to find thousands of people on the voter rolls who shouldn't be there, let's take it with a grain of salt," he advises. "Democrats all over the country have weakened election integrity rules; they have brought in millions of illegal aliens and weakened the rules for voting and for registering to vote, and now they're shocked when they find out that illegals were not only registered, but were actually voting? Give me a break."
New Jersey is among 19 states that allow people who are in the U.S. illegally to hold driver's licenses and other state-issued ID cards.
The SAVE America Act would direct states to remove non-citizens from the voter rolls and ensure that only American citizens vote in American elections by requiring a valid ID before registering to vote in a federal election and proof of citizenship. It would also eliminate mail-in ballots, except for illness, disability, military or travel.
According to the White House, it is crucial for election integrity and voter security.
