Swalwell, a seven-term congressman, announced Monday he is resigning from Congress. That announcement came just two days after withdrawing as a candidate for California governor in a so-called “jungle primary” of 61 candidates.
The withdrawal and the resignation came after numerous women have gone public with stories of being sexually harassed by Swalwell while working as Capitol Hill staffers.
Kevin McGary, chairman of the Frederick Douglas Foundation of California, tells AFN the loss of Swalwell should help the top two Republican candidates in the race, Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco.
“I think it does shake up the governor's race a little bit and actually puts Republicans here in California in a much stronger position,” McGary observes.
On the lengthy gubernatorial ballot, it was certified with 24 candidates listed as Democrats and 12 who qualified as Republicans.
Among the Democrats who qualified, McGary says Swalwell entered the race with lots of name recognition and was leading the pack of Democrats.
“With the remaining people on the Democrat ticket, they're going to consume and absorb one another as far as vote count is concerned,” McGary predicts.
