U.S. blocks Cuba from Venezuelan oil, discontent could lead to regime change

A national defense analyst says that the growing discontent among Cuba’s population could lead to an internal insurrection that overthrows the current regime and puts in place something that the U.S. can tolerate.

President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to the repressive government in Havana, Cuba, that there will be no more oil or money coming from Venezuela, reported Associated Press. Trump said on social media that Cuba long lived off Venezuelan oil and money and had offered security in return, "BUT NOT ANYMORE!" The president added, "I strongly suggest they make a deal, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE."

However, Cuba's president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, defied Trump's warning, claiming that the U.S. has "no moral authority to point the finger at Cuba in any way, absolutely in any way." Nonetheless, Trump said that Cuba is “going down for the count."

Because of their previous agreement, Cuba had two security agencies in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas. The government has said that 32 of their military personnel were killed during the extraction of Nicolás Maduro.  Meanwhile, Trump said that Venezuela is now under the protection of the U.S., claiming the country does not need “protection anymore from the thugs and extortionists who held them hostage for so many years.”

Maginnis, Robert (FRC) Maginnis

Bob Maginnis, a national defense analyst and president of Maginnis Strategies, LLC, says that Cuba is holding on the skin of their teeth.

“They don't have a lot of assets. They're still driving the ancient vehicles there. They were dependent upon the cut price of petroleum that Maduro was sending them. They were depending upon the Russians, and of course, the Russians are having their issues," states Maginnis.

Maginnis thinks that the days of the regime could be numbered.

"I think, with the discontent amongst the people there and with a very healthy human population 90 miles away in Florida, that you have a real good chance of revisiting some sort of internal insurrection that overthrows that government,” says Maginnis,” and puts in place something that we can tolerate a lot more than we have the Castro brothers for the last fifty-plus years."
