Trump told the nation Wednesday night that the country is recovering from Joe Biden's mess. Using charts to compare the economic conditions under four years of Biden to the present he said, "Eleven months ago, I inherited a mess, and I'm fixing it. We're poised for an economic boom, the likes of which the world has never seen."
Mainstream news outlets reported the president was manic, scared and defensive in his White House speech.
Nick Fondacaro of Media Research Center says it was actually the media that seemed backed into a corner.
"And you saw a lot of them, like, rushing to try to fact-check. They were up in arms over him, sort of portraying him as he defeated evil. And they took almost personal offense to it because they're the media, right? Like, we're the ones that are supposed to defeat the evil, and it's you."
Gary Bauer is chairman of The Campaign for Working Families. He had a different take on the speech than mainstream media.
“The things that jumped out at me is there have been major improvements in the inflation problem in specific areas. Gasoline prices are way down for example. A Turkey this past Thanksgiving cost 30% less than it did last year. The same with eggs, which had been sky high, and now we're at a more reasonable price. So, everything is on a great trajectory, and I thought the president did a great job last night."
In his speech, Trump responded to the public frustration this year over the economy by making promises on growth next year, saying that mortgage rates would be coming down and that he “would announce some of the most aggressive housing reform plans in American history.”
And one of the highlights of Trump's address was his announcement that the nation's 1.45 million military service members will receive a bonus check for 1,776 dollars, the amount a reference to next year's 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
"I like something like this going to these families. Most of those families are already productive members of society. They're already making money. They're already buying things and investing in things, and to reward them on the 250th anniversary of our country with this stimulus check, at a time when the economy could use a little boost, I think is a really good idea."
