Voter apathy could be a problem for Republicans in 2026

A conservative activist says he is worried going into the 2026 midterm elections.

Mid-term elections are just around the corner, a second time for a Donald Trump presidency. A number of conservative political pundits have voiced concerns about apparent Republican apathy.

One of them is Gary Bauer, who is chairman of Campaign for Working Families.

Bauer, Gary Bauer

"I'm worried going into the mid-terms. There are a variety of reasons for it. First of all, when one side has got the reins of government, a lot of people tend to go back to sleep, think everything's OK. So that's something that has to be overcome."

Another concern is the make-up of the electorate. Bauer says loyal Trump voters aren't necessarily loyal Republican voters.

"When he is not on the ballot, and he's not going to be on the ballot again, that vote is showing signs that it will not show up. So that's something that J.D. Vance or whoever's going to be nominated (for president in 2028) is going to have to figure out a way to overcome."

Bauer says Trump's recent rally in Pennsylvania should be repeated during the 2026 election cycle.

He says the GOP is going to have to run an ad and grassroots campaign that could cost more than a presidential campaign.

"There's no question that he's going to have to campaign, and Susie Wiles, who is probably the key person in the White House, has made it clear that they're going to campaign in 2026 as if it were 2024."
