GOP rep: Trump well within limitations of War Powers Act

A Republican House member is dismissing Democratic cries for the impeachment of Donald Trump after the commander in chief directed the U.S. military to take out Iran's nuclear infrastructure.

A majority of congressional Democrats remain silent on the actions President Trump took over the weekend against nuclear facilities in Iran. A few, including Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, are praising the decision; and a few, including New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (pictured above), are calling for President Trump's impeachment. (See related story)

Congressman Jeff Crank (R-Colorado) tells AFN the actual beliefs of the left side of the congressional aisle are becoming apparent. "Democrats always claim to support Israel, but then when it comes right down to it, do they?" he asks. "It's another week – and of course that means it's another call from Democrats for impeachment of President Trump."

He points out it's not the first time a president has taken military action without congressional approval.

"These are the same Democrats, by the way, who didn't care when Bill Clinton launched cruise missiles without any authorization from Congress; also when Barack Obama was sending drones in to attack and kill people," Crank notes.

As for when the President is required to get congressional approval for military action, Crank said that's constitutionally vague on purpose.

"Our Founding Fathers made it very vague. They gave the president the power of being commander in chief, but they also gave Congress the power to declare war."

He says in this case, President Trump is well within the window allowed for by the War Powers Act. "Congress said, 'You can act according to your wishes as commander in chief for 60 days,' and the president did that. He's on day three now of that."
