Ill. legislature axes radical bills, defends homeschooling rights

After two controversial bills died in the legislature, the State of Illinois will not be legalizing prostitution or psychedelic drugs anytime soon.

David E. Smith, of Illinois Family Institute, says the organization was grateful when both controversial measures failed during the current term.

"One was the legalization of prostitution in the state of Illinois, which is very concerning. They call it legalizing sex workers,” he says. “We know that's just a sanitized version of prostitution.”

The bill, HB 3518, is named the Keeping Sex Workers Safe Act. It was introduced by Rep. Will Guzzardi, a far-left Democrat who represents Chicago.

The second measure would have legalized psychedelic drugs, such as LSD and mushrooms, but it also failed in the Democrat-led legislature.

Smith says it was just a few years ago when Illinois legalized recreational marijuana, and the result has not been good.

"In the years since then we've learned that daily use of marijuana throughout the nation has now exceeded the daily use of alcohol,” he warns. “So we've got people on our streets, in our communities, who are now inebriated."

Earlier this week, Illinois Family also learned a bill threatening homeschool freedom in Illinois failed to advance while a bill allowing assisted suicide failed.
