Pay no mind to too-early polling in hypothetical Allred-Paxton Senate race, Adams says

A former Texas Republican leader is skeptical about a poll that shows a recently defeated Democrat could win a Senate seat in 2026.

In 2024, Democrat Congressman Colin Allred was hyped as a serious challenger to incumbent Senator Ted Cruz.

The Democrat Party poured millions and millions of dollars into the state to try to take down Cruz, but the effort failed as Cruz won 53% to 44%.

Now the Houston Chronicle reports that it has obtained an internal Republican poll that supposedly states a potential 2026 Senate matchup between Allred and Ken Paxton (shown above) would be a disaster for Republicans. Allred (shown left with Cruz), supposedly, would defeat Paxton 52% to 37%.

Paxton, the current Texas Attorney General, recently announced a primary challenge to Republican incumbent Senator John Cornyn.

Cathie Adams is a former chair of the Republican Party of Texas.

"What Colin Allred is known as is a loser. He lost to Ted Cruz. That is not going to play well to run again for the U.S. Senate. He cannot expect to win. There's no way."

Adams says it is way too early to be taking polls on a race more than a year away. She believes Texans will respond to Donald Trump’s success in locking down the state’s southern border.

"This is no way in the world that they know how the people are thinking, and I think that Texans are going to stay conservative. They are going to even go further right when they say that our border is not only secure, but it's going to stay secure,” she said.

Were Allred, a member of the U.S. House since 2019, to win next year's election, he would become the first Democratic Senator from Texas since Robert Krueger in 1993.

He has said he’s considering joining the race.

Adams believes Paxton’s experience and popularity will carry him in the race.

“When you've already got a candidate who has won a number of statewide elections and is very popular with the voters in Texas, then I do not see any way whatsoever that a Democrat is going to take that seat."
