Ten Democrats, several from liberal states, side with Republicans in censure of Green

A former Texas Republican leader says Congressman Al Green is an embarrassment and needs to be sent home.

By a 224-198 vote, the House of Representatives censured Green (shown above) for disrupting President Donald Trump's address to Congress Tuesday night.

Ten Democrats voted with the Republicans to approve the censure resolution that officially registers the House's deep disapproval of a member's conduct. Once such a resolution is approved by majority vote, the member is asked to stand in the well of the House while the speaker or presiding officer reads the resolution.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (above) approached the numbers from the other direction writing on X, “198 Democrats just voted against censuring Rep. Al Green. Instead of supporting decorum, they defended his shameful and egregious behavior. What an embarrassment.”

Johnson said he had no choice but to remove Green after repeated outbursts during Trump’s speech.

“Rep. Al Green’s shameful and egregious behavior during President Trump’s Joint Address disgraced the institution of Congress and the constituents he serves. Despite my repeated warnings, he refused to cease his antics, and I was forced to remove him from the chamber.”

Green’s behavior was not accidental, Johnson said.

“He deliberately violated House rules, and an expeditious vote of censure is an appropriate remedy. Any Democrat who is concerned about regaining the trust and respect of the American people should join House Republicans in this effort.

Cathie Adams, a former chairman of the Republican Party of Texas, said Green’s actions were shameful on multiple levels.

“Al Green is an embarrassment to America. He's an embarrassment internationally, and as a Texan, oh my goodness, he is a super embarrassment. Al Green needs to be sent home."

Adams is appalled that during the censure reading Democrats moved into the well of the House and along with Green disrupted the proceedings.

No thought of constituents

"What they are doing now and how it is being displayed for everyone to see is absolutely nothing that someone as a constituent could stand up and say I'm proud of him or I'm proud of her. These are shameful, hateful actions and they're not common sense. They are not in the best interest of their constituents. They need to go home."

Democrats from liberal states like California, Hawaii, Washington and Connecticut sided with Republicans.

Following the vote Green stated he was prepared to accept the consequences for his actions then proceeded to lead further disruption.

A number of Democrats gathered around him in the House well and sang “We Shall Overcome,” leading Johnson to call for order.
