Immigration steadily ranked as one of the top concerns among U.S. voters. Exit polling by NBC on Tuesday showed it ranked behind democracy, the economy and abortion.
More than 70% of those surveyed said they were either dissatisfied or angry with the way things are going in the country.
Leading up to the election, the Biden-Harris administration went out of its way to cite statistics that show the number of border encounters have come down in recent months.
But Ira Mehlman, who is media director for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, says the reduction has nothing to do with anything the administration has actually done.
Biden's plea for help
"The administration has outsourced our
border security to the Mexican government. There was a conversation, a call between President Biden and President Lopez Obrador, the president of Mexico. Presumably Joe Biden asked him ‘can you help me out here? This isn't looking good.’ At the time he was still running for president."
Mehlman says the Mexican president took action to curb migrant traffic.
“So Mexico has done more to secure its own southern border to prevent people from moving up to the US border. They have also apprehended third-country migrants near the US border and transported them back into southern Mexico. The hope is that they will get discouraged and simply give up, but we should not be outsourcing the vital interests of our country to foreign governments."
Mehlman says the responsibility for the securing our border lies in Washington D.C., not Mexico City or any place else.
