Msg to GOP: Take a balanced approach this week

A conservative political columnist says it's important for Republicans to focus on policies and not personalities in their convention this week.

The Republican National Convention began today in Milwaukee, with delegates in high spirits as they celebrate the nomination of Donald Trump whose poll numbers are riding high. Meanwhile, Democrats find themselves in disarray over questions about the mental health of President Joe Biden and the possibility that he might not ultimately be their nominee.

But the Trump campaign plans to present his vision for America related to his well-known slogan "Make America Great Again." On Monday the theme is economics: "Make America Wealthy Once Again"; on Tuesday the focus is immigration and crime: "Make America Safe Once Again"; Wednesday is national security day: "Make America Strong Once Again"; and Thursday will culminate with Trump's formal nomination speech: "Make America Great Once Again."

Robert Knight is a conservative activist and a columnist for The Washington Times,

Robert Knight Knight

"I think the Republicans have to remind Americans why they're so miserable, why prices are so high at the gas pump in the grocery store, [and] why there's so much crime breaking out," Knight advises. "And so much of it is due to immigrants who have swarmed across our border without vetting. The Democrats are extremely vulnerable on so many policy points."

Consequently, the columnist argues Republicans will be missing the mark if they focus on defending Trump.

"Trump had successful policies – they have to remind Americans about that. But at the same time, they have to point out how the Democrats have damaged America," he states.

"It's a balancing act: you have to have a positive agenda going forth, and you can cite the Trump successes for that. At the same time, you have to place the blame squarely for America's problems on the current radical Democrat Party."

Biden reminded of his destructive policies

Speaking of Democratic policies, a group of conservative leaders last month sent an open letter to President Biden condemning his administration's policies that they say are "systematically destroying the hopes and dreams of the American people." The letter from Dr. James Dobson and his ministry leadership addresses such topics as "threatening our democracy," "undermining religious liberty," and "devaluing the sanctity of life."

Bauer, Gary (American Values) Bauer

Gary Bauer is vice president for public policy at the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute and one of the signatories of the letter.

"We have been talking about the fact that while there's a lot of focus on the president's physical and mental limitations, the real issue the country is facing is the radical policies he's implementing in which anybody who would replace him from that party would continue to implement," he tells AFN.

Bauer explains other issues brought forward by the letter:

"Telling the president in about a dozen areas how his policies are wrecking the country and hurting American families and American values, undermining the sanctity of life and the safety of women and girls because of the radical transgender ideology that Biden's pushing. And we urged him to stop this as quickly as possible before he destroys America's future."

Bauer reports more than 10,000 signatures have been collected thus far – and that the names continue to come in.
