A state constitutional amendment that would require Nevadans to show a picture ID when they vote is one step closer to making the ballot.

A group named Repair the Vote PAC has submitted 179,000 signatures from registered Nevada voters that support a constitutional amendment to show a photo I.D. when casting a ballot. A total of 102,000  valid signatures were required, so state officials will verify the signatures in the coming weeks.

Repair the Vote chairman David Gibbs tells AFN the ballot measure addresses more than casting a ballot at a voting precinct.

“Everybody who mails in their ballot to include either the last four of their driver's license or the last four of their Social Security number,” he says.

Opponents of the measure have trotted out the same Democrat talking points, such as minorities aren’t capable of obtaining voter I.D., which they allege makes the push to require one racist voter suppression.

Gibbs says the data disagrees with the talking points, such as a Fox News poll done in early June.

“Basically, about 95% of those who support President Trump are in favor of this and about 73% to 75% of those who support President Biden are in favor of this,” he says of that poll.

Gibbs and Repair the Vote can also point to a 2023 poll done by The Nevada Independent. It found 74% of registered Nevadans support voter I.D.

Gibbs says the increasing popularity of voter I.D. laws has Democrats in a panic. That panic could be related to a familiar Republican talking point: Democrats cheat in elections, which is why they hate voter I.D.
