Red guv in Red state holds razor-thin lead, says poll

A public policy analyst based in Mississippi expects voter turnout will determine which candidate ultimately wins his state's gubernatorial race next month.

The incumbent, Republican Governor Tate Reeves (pictured) , is facing a tough re-election challenge in a state won handily by Donald Trump in 2020. A recent poll by Public Policy Polling shows Democratic challenger Brandon Presley only one point down (45% to 46%) with nearly 10% of voters still undecided less than two weeks before the November 7 election.

Jameson Taylor is director of policy and legislative affairs at AFA Action. He points out the poll was commissioned by the Democrat Governors Association, which is based in the nation's capital.

"Brandon Presley has received $3 million from the Democratic Governors Association and … people like Stacey Abrams [and other] out-of-state, big-money, far-left Democrats," he explains. Mississippi Today actually reports the DGA has given "at least $3.75 million" to Presley's campaign.

"They're hoping to see a very close race here in Mississippi – and they're presuming that there's going to be heavy Democrat turnout," he adds.

Taylor argues that Reeves has done a commendable job defending traditional values in the Magnolia State. "According to iVoterGuide, Tate Reeves is a 'verified conservative,'" he tells AFN. "He's cut taxes. He helped pass the Mississippi law that overturned Roe v. Wade. He stood very strong for religious freedom."

That said, Taylor argues voters who support conservative values – regardless how they feel about Reeves – need to head to the polls on November 7.

One of the two candidates must receive 50%-plus-one to avoid a runoff; a third, independent candidate dropped out of the race too late to be removed from the ballot – which means votes for that person could result in neither Reeves nor Presley reaching that threshold.
