Back-handed compliment from Ohio: Abortion supporters fooled voters

After witnessing Ohio’s lopsided vote on a ballot initiative, a conservative activist says opponents of Issue 1 deserve credit for deceiving constitution-minded voters.

As AFN reported this week, Democrats and leftist groups used a well-funded campaign to convince Ohio voters to reject Issue 1, which would have raised the approval threshold to amend the Ohio State Constitution to 60% of the vote instead of the current 50% plus one.

After that defeat, abortion supporters are prepared to introduce a constitutional amendment to expanded abortion access in red-state Ohio despite current pro-life laws and pro-life public officials.

Tom Zawistowski, executive director of the We the People Convention, tells AFN he gives credit to the other side for its clever and deceitful tactics. In one example from a TV ad, conservative-leaning voters were warned – by the Left – about altering the state constitution and supposedly surrendering the rights of voters in the future.

The ad cleverly manipulated the conservative stance on surrendering our rights to politicians and the government, Zawistowski says, so many voters marked “no” on the ballot.

Looking at the Tuesday results, the tea party leader says the effort was hugely successful. He points to Donald Trump-supporting Northeast Ohio, which was persuaded to vote against Issue 1.

"It wasn't that the Left won. It was that the Right lost,” he summarizes. “We did not carry the red counties that Trump won so decisively. That's why we lost."
