'Incredibly unfair' to try Trump in DC, says attorney

A constitutional attorney calls it "an absolute disgrace" that a third indictment awaits a former occupant of the Oval Office.

Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday he received a letter from the Justice Department informing him that he is a target of the investigation into the alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Such letters often indicate the receiver could soon be indicted by U.S. prosecutors.

Trump – who has already seen two indictments in the past several months – was unfazed in the face of more legal attacks. Instead, he carried on as he has for months and incorporated his latest legal woes into his usual speech about the 2020 election, criticism of President Joe Biden, and his agenda for a second term.

Phillip Jauregui is senior counsel and director of the Center for Judicial Renewal at AFA Action. "If it's related to January 6th, nothing is legitimate," he tells AFN.

"I think these previous indictments were very flimsy, as this one would be, but it was intended to probably soften up public perception," the attorney continued. "This would now be the third time that the American people have seen the president walk into a courthouse and be indicted. So, I'm shocked. This is an absolute disgrace."

Jauregui is concerned that a potential trial would be held in the District of Columbia, where he says Trump can't get a fair trial.

"It would be like your favorite sports team and pick their main rival," Jauregui says. "And imagine judging one of those teams by a jury of the other team. That's exactly what it's like in DC. You have a bunch of Marxist Democrats who by and large hate Republicans; and you bring them an indictment against President Trump, who's a Republican and a conservative."

That, argues the attorney, is "incredibly unfair – and the people in DC who are doing this know exactly what they're doing."

Jauregui says the matter might ultimately be decided in the U.S. Supreme Court.
