4 lies about money the world wants you to believe – & the biblical truth

The world around us has no shortage of lies that they want us to believe when it comes to money. But we can tear them down one by one with God's Word.

Lie #1

The world's lie: "Your money is yours so do whatever makes you happy with it."

The Truth: Everything we have is all God's, we are simply managers of what He has entrusted to us.

Read:

Matthew 25:14-30 – The Parable of the Talents

Psalm 24:1 – "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;"

Lie #2

The world's lie: "Keep trying to get rich quick, it'll be different this time."

The Truth: Attempting to get rich quick is an exercise in futility. Money that comes quickly goes quickly, and the key to building wealth is to go slow and steady.

Read:

Proverbs 13:11 – Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.

Proverbs 20:21 – An inheritance claimed too soon will not be blessed at the end.

Lie #3

The world's lie: "Don't give until you have extra that you don't need."

The Truth: If you want more to manage, start giving now. Give from the first of what you get and give the best.

Read:

2 Corinthians 9:6-11 – Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: "They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever." Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

Proverbs 11:25 – A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.

Proverbs 3:9 – Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;

Lie #4

The world's lie: "Success only comes to those who hustle and grind and sacrifice everything important to get it."

The Truth: The path to success is in abiding in Him and His Word.

Read:

Joshua 1:8 – Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Psalm 1:1-3 – Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither – whatever they do prospers.

John 15 – "Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

Take a few minutes to examine whether any of these lies have taken root in your heart. If so, meditate on these scriptures and prayerfully ask God to replace the lie with the truth of His Word.
