As previously reported on AFN, the relationship between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Trump is quite chilly.
Trump recently disinvited the Canadian leader to be part of his Board of Peace formed to map out the future of the war-torn Gaza-Strip.
The two had exchanged fighting words over Canadian sovereignty during the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Bob Maginnis, a national defense analyst, tells AFN the Canadians depend on Americans for much of their economy.
"They depend upon us for so many things. So we need to recognize that we can leverage influence on them through our various economic mechanisms," Maginnis advises.
Maginnis is also concerned with Carney's friendly overtures with communist China.
"My concern would be, if we find that we have a lot more Chinese there that are running things, that are setting up businesses and the like, then that becomes a national security issue which I'm sure, at least under Trump, we would push back," Maginnis tells AFN.
