National defense analyst expects the Russian/Ukraine war to continue despite Trump’s promise

A national defense analyst says despite the promise of President Trump, the war between Ukraine and Russia will not end anytime soon.

A national defense analyst says despite the promise of President Donald Trump, the war between Ukraine and Russia will not end anytime soon.

President Trump posted on Truth Social that Vladimir Putin has gone completely crazy after the Russians pounded Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities with drones and missiles for a third straight night. As previously reported by AFN, this attack is one of the largest aerial assaults from Russia to Ukraine since 2022, resulting in 12 dead as Russia fires into Ukraine cities.

Trump reiterates that Russia has always planned to conquer all of Ukraine. Now, Trump is losing his patience with the Russian leader, warning that if Putin wants to conquer all of Ukraine, it will "lead to the downfall of Russia!"

Russia is not the only source of Trump’s irritation as the president was also critical Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, saying, "Everything out of his mouth causes problems. I don't like it, and it better stop."

Trump has increasingly voiced irritation at the inability to resolve the now three-year-old war, which the president promised during the 2024 campaign that he would promptly end. While Trump previously had faith that Russia would be willing to end the war and find peace, he recognizes that the war is still continuing despite his plan as he continues to try to convince Putin to stop the attack.

While some people believed that Trump could immediately end this war, others were skeptical about Trump’s ability to help bring a fast resolution. Bob Maginnis is Senior Fellow for National Security at the Family Research Council and author of Preparing for World War III.

"I don't think anybody really believed that Trump would end it right away. We have to recognize that it is harder to put the genie back in the bottle than it is to let it loose at the outset. And of course, I blame Biden for that."

Because of the present conditions, Maginnis predicts a longer protracted conflict.

"I don't see it ending shortly. I always said that I don't think the war would have started had Trump been president. However, I never embraced the idea that he was going to snap his fingers and this was going to be over. That was political fodder for an unfortunate reality to what we're facing."
