Canada’s national government is well known for its liberal policies, including immigration, but the country’s immigration minister recently announced a first-ever cap on temporary residents for three years and a two-year cap on international students.
Canada’s international students, who currently make up 42% of temporary residents there, will get dropped to 35% under the new guidelines.
Ira Mehlman, of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, says Canada has been letting people flow in with loose regulations and basically figuring it out on the fly.
“Well, that's not working,” he says “We are seeing in Canada and the United States, in every Western country, that it is creating strains within those societies.”
Back in the U.S., the Biden administration is raising alarm bells with plans to welcome Palestinian refugees into the country from war-torn Gaza.
Eric Raurk, director of research at Numbers USA, says the biggest concern is a lack of thorough vetting process for people seeking legal refugee status.
“They're coming from an area of the world, a region which has a lot of people who are hostile to the United States to put it mildly,” he warns.
Citing a Hill story, AFN reported the Biden administration is considering resettling Palestinians who have relatives living in the U.S.
Beyond the legitimate concern for national security, Raurk says, is concern the Biden administration is welcoming millions of foreign nationals here with no concern about public safety and national security.
“Put those two things together,” he says, “and it's obviously a recipe for disaster."
