The head of an immigration enforcement think tank suggests that a city council member in a Chicago suburb was trying to expose the hypocrisy of residents who voted to make his city a "sanctuary" community.

Naperville, an affluent suburb roughly 30 miles west of Chicago, recently abandoned an idea proposed by a city council member to put out a sign-up sheet for residents willing to open their homes to illegal aliens. Josh McBroom, a city council member, made headlines during a January 16 council meeting discussion about what his city should do if a wave of illegal immigrants spilled into their community from Chicago.

McBroom told Fox News that his proposal was aimed at Naperville residents whose votes led to the "open border policy" of the Biden years. In fact, he said, over half of the town voted for the sanctuary policy.

"Am I being provocative with my proposal? A little bit, but I'm being genuine, too," the councilman stated. "[I'm asking our residents] 'Are you going to help out? Because we're not going to spend tax dollars on it.'"

Krikorian, Mark (Ctr. for Immigration Studies) Krikorian

Mark Krikorian is executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies. "My sense is that was a troll all along. In other words, he was trolling them," he tells AFN. "'You want to be a sanctuary city? Well then, why don't you sign up to take him in your home?' And it's a very effective troll."

At the same time, says Krikorian, Governor Maura Healey of Massachusetts made the same proposal – but she was serious.

"And she was doing it unironically," he exclaims. "In other words, if I understand correctly, this guy in Naperville would be like me making that suggestion – [that is,] he was anti-sanctuary. He was trying to call their bluff and show that the sanctuary people were hypocrites.

"[But] the fact is that the governor of Massachusetts suggested this seriously – and all I can say is Knock yourself out. Do it. See what happens."
