The Democratic mayors of Chicago, New York City, and Denver continue to complain to Washington, DC, about Texas sending illegal aliens to their cities by bus and plane. Mayors Brandon Johnson (Chicago), Eric Adams (NYC), and Mike Johnston (Denver) have sharply criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the effort, saying buses arrive at all hours and outside designated drop-off zones with no details on who is aboard. The three mayors are demanding more money from Washington to deal with the problem.
Ira Mehlman, media director for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, says the mayors need to change their tune.
"The reaction of these mayors has been the same for a long time," Mehlman tells AFN. "Their ships are sinking. [But] they're not asking for the Biden administration to fix the ship – they're asking for bigger buckets to bail the waters."
Mehlman points out that the Democratic mayors, who oversee so-called "sanctuary cities," did not complain about Biden's policies until states like Texas started shipping the illegal immigrants north to their cities.
"If you don't want Governor Abbott to send these people to Chicago or New York or one of these other places, [make it so] they can't get into Texas in the first place – then he can't send them," Mehlman argues.
"That's the answer – have the administration implement policies that make it clear [to the illegal aliens that] wherever you're coming across along that border, we're going to send you back."
Mehlman says Congress needs to step up in 2024 and pass a foreign aid bill that will mandate more enforcement dollars.
