As AFN has reported, the FBI is on the lookout for "more than a dozen" migrants from Uzbekistan and elsewhere who recently entered the country with assistance of a smuggler with ties to ISIS. The migrants sought asylum at the border and were released into the United States.
Ira Mehlman, media director for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), says the incident set off alarm bells among top national security officials.
"The FBI shouldn't have had to look for these people in the first place," he insists. "They should have been kept out. We should have had a policy at the border that turns people back when they come to the United States illegally. Instead, we have an administration that has sent a clear signal that if you cross that border illegally and say, 'I want political asylum,' you're going to be released."
But now Mehlman says the border situation has reached a point where there is simply no way to vet all the people who are coming across.
"We wind up in a situation where the FBI is left scrambling," he notes. "We shouldn't be scrambling in these situations; we should be prepared, and we should prevent it from ever happening in the first place."
Unfortunately, the Biden administration continues to display that such readiness is not a priority.
"They're putting the nation's security at risk," Mehlman concludes.
