HUD Secretary Scott Turner recently visited the Light of Life Rescue Mission in Pittsburgh. The purpose of the trip was to learn more about the faith-based nonprofit's work to uplift those experiencing homelessness in the community.
Turner also serves as an Associate Pastor at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas.
"Light of Life is a tremendous Christian organization there in Pittsburgh," Turner tells AFN. "It's a rescue mission, and I heard powerful testimonies of those that have been restored, that have been helped by Light of Life."
One man who was coming out of prison was sent to Light of Life and is now working there as an employee focused on maintenance and building operations. Turner explains that they man’s life was transformed by the power of the Gospel and the leaders at Light of Life.
"They look at homelessness from a holistic standpoint – not just housing people but bringing the wrap around services to help them, to not only have somewhere to live but to be transformed by way of mental health, by way of their faith, their family, and job training and to live lives of self-sustainability and self-sufficiency,” Turner says.
Light of Life has been "serving Pittsburgh's homeless and hurting since 1952." What began with a soup kitchen was expanded to services that include men's recovery programs. In a section of its website where it outlines its values, Light of Life says "We Honor God, We Love Well, We Embrace Growth, We Value Diversity."
