Report: state's gender transition ban is being ignored

A spokesperson for Texas' largest faith-focused policy organization is calling for a thorough investigation into doctors' illegal actions.

Texas state law prohibits "gender transition" medical interventions such as surgeries, puberty blockers, and cross sex hormones for minors, but Sara Gonzales of Blaze TV reports the Texas Medical Association is still doing those things.

She says state Rep. Steve Toth (R), who is trying to raise awareness that the law is being ignored, has found a swarm of parents across the United States, especially in Republican-led states like Texas, who say their children are secretly getting transitioned.

Toth says legislators' "big failure" was not banning social transitioning; it opened up a loophole for doctors to continue administering puberty blockers under the veil of "precocious puberty."

Mary Elizabeth Castle of Texas Values thinks this needs to be "thoroughly investigated."

"This is clearly against the law that was passed in 2023," she asserts.

Her organization recently celebrated that Dr. May Lau, who was sued last year by Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) for violating the Ban on Childhood Gender Modification Law (SB 14), surrendered her Texas medical license and left the state.

In January, the Department of Justice dropped all charges against Dr. Eithan Haim, the surgeon whistleblower from Texas Children's Hospital who claimed that despite public statements that the hospital had paused "gender-affirming care" for minors, the hospital secretly continued providing hormone therapies and other interventions.

Dr. Haim was indicted in 2024 on four counts of criminal HIPAA violations, but he defended his actions, saying he felt morally compelled to expose what he viewed as "abuse."

Around the same time, a nurse named Vanessa Sivadge came forward alleging that Texas Children's Hospital committed Medicaid fraud by billing for "gender-affirming" procedures for minors. She claimed that some of them were being billed in a way that violated Texas law.

According to Gonzales' report, the Texas Medical Association is teaching doctors to prescribe Lupron, a puberty blocker, for children until they go through puberty and can receive cross-sex hormones.

"It continues to be a high priority to investigate these doctors and make sure that this is completely eradicated in the state of Texas," Castle tells AFN.

Governor Greg Abbott (R) and AG Paxton frame their efforts as protecting children's health and parental rights. They recognize their role in preventing irreversible medical interventions on children, and they maintain that gender-transition procedures for minors are experimental and harmful.
