Hegseth has been the favorite target of left-leaning pundits since he was confirmed. Yahoo reported Begala was set to mislead viewers by exposing the reckless spending Hegseth was “trying to get away with.”
“He has spent $15 million in one month for ribeye steak, $6.9 million for lobster tail — all for himself — lobster tails, while our troops are eating MREs?” Begala asked.
CNN's thorn in the flesh, conservative Scott Jennings almost felt sorry for Begala.
“Do you believe the Secretary of Defense is personally eating all the lobster? It’s for the troops,” Jennings countered.
Yes, as a matter of fact, Begala did believe that. Was Jennings so naïve as to believe the troops would actually be getting lobster?
“Really, the troops are getting lobster? They're getting lobster. You are so full of it,” Begala said.
The men and women on the front line were, in fact, treated to steak and lobster. This is not an uncommon indulgence on the eve of battle, which Jennings mentioned.
“Frequently in theater! Troops who are going to war,” Jennings said.
David French, a New York Times columnist, posted on X supporting Jennings’ statement. He said this happened almost every Sunday when he was serving in Iraq.
“It was the military’s version of a thank you meal, and it was very appreciated. There are lots of things to be outraged at, but feeding our deployed troops well is not one of them,” French posted.
Curtis Houck of Media Research Center says Begala was so confident of pining on something he knew absolutely nothing about because he's done it so many times before and was never called out for it.
“Paul Begala is probably trusting CNN viewers to believe what he is saying because he is a fellow liberal and not actually look it up for themselves,” Houck comments.
Houck says every liberal network should have a Scott Jennings.
“He is only one man, but it is refreshing to have someone in enemy territory unafraid to interject when something demonstrably false is stated,” Houck says.
