In ballot measure, 'victory' for Nebraska could mean another pro-life state chooses abortion

Reacting to a new court ruling, Nebraska’s pro-lifers are witnessing abortion supporters cheer for another ballot measure that would put the right to kill the unborn in another state constitution.

In the ruling, which came Sept. 13, the Nebraska Supreme Court said competing ballot measures – to expand abortion in the state or to limit it – can appear on the November ballot.

With two competing ballot measures in Nebraska, the one that gets the most “for” votes Nov. 5 will be adopted.

An abortion supporter called the court ruling a “victory for all Nebraskans,” but pro-lifers know that means more unborn babies will be lost in the womb.

Matt Heffron, an attorney for Thomas More Society, says the state will experience unregulated, late-term abortions if the measure passes in the pro-life state.

“This would be catastrophic,” he says, “if suddenly they had one of the most radical abortion laws in their constitution, one of the most radical in the nation.”

Thomas More is involved in the ballot measures because it represented pro-life plaintiffs in a lawsuit that led to last week’s ruling.

After witnessing the U.S. Supreme Court strike down their beloved Roe v Wade ruling two years ago, abortion supporters have found success with state referendums that uphold abortion rights. Those pro-abortion efforts around the country have overwhelmed the pro-life side with much more funding for political ads and door-to-door activism.

According to Heffron, the pro-life side in Nebraska must get to work before Election Day.

“That means all hands on deck,” he says. “Nobody remains on the sidelines.”
