Iran is on the clock again.

Its leaders ignored a 60-day window for a negotiated nuclear agreement with U.S. President Donald Trump, and Israel began its mission to destroy Iranian nuclear facilities on Day 61.

Now Iran has a second chance.

As Israel’s targeted bombardment of Iran continues, Trump said Thursday no possible U.S. action against Iran would occur within the next two weeks.

The most obvious action for Trump to consider would involve the 30,000-pound Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) or “bunker buster” bombs.

Israel lacks bombs of that size and strength and the necessary aircraft to handle them if they did.

Using the bunker busters would almost certainly require a direct U.S. strike against Iran.

Is Trump’s status quo strategy working?

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Arizona) doesn’t believe Trump will make that call – yet.

“I think you'd have to see something very deliberate on the part of Iran as an attack on our men, women, and our facilities. I think that would probably do it,” Biggs said on Washington Watch Thursday.

“In any event, short of that, I think he's going to stay out and say that Israel has the munitions, they have the training, they have incredible intelligence,” Biggs told show host Jody Hice.

While many call for regime change in Iran, including Reza Pahlavi, Iran’s exiled crown prince, Trump administration sources Thursday told The New York Post that the president may be interested in propping up Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a bit longer.

Trump has concerns that regime change could plunge Iran into chaos similar to that experienced in Libya in 2011 after the U.S. joined a NATO bombing campaign to oust dictator Muammar Gaddafi, The Post reported.

“What Israel has done is amazing. I think the president is just saying we’re going to leverage that to protect the United States,” Biggs said.

From the outset of the war, now a week old, administration voices have spoken of the need to protect U.S. Military men and women at postings nearby.

Additional military assets have been deployed to the region including two aircraft carriers – the USS Harry S. Truman and the USS Carl Vinson. It’s a rare dual-carrier presence under Trump’s watch.

Also deployed are advanced air defense systems and aerial refueling support.

Trump has also ordered the evacuation of nonessential diplomats and their families from the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem.

Dr. Hormoz Shariat fled his native Iran during Islamic revolution and ended up settling in America and founded Iran Alive. He told AFN it is imperative for Iran's nuclear program to be neutralized.

"When they have it, nothing stops them from using it. Actually, they have threatened when we have a bomb, we're going to try it on Israel. They've said it, some of these clerics have said it. So for the good of the world stop that because they're crazy."

Trump concerns aside, Shariat says regime change is really the only option to guarantee peace.

"For the sake of the world, the Iranian government has to stop. And for the people of Iran. They say Israel, come and take out our leaders, just like how you did it in Lebanon. But don't harm us. Don't attack our cities. Don't kill the civilians, just come and then laser point accuracy, take these people out."

GOP Senators Lindsey Graham (South Carolina) and Ted Cruz (Texas) have expressed support for a U.S. strike with the bunker busters.

“Go all in and finish the job,” Graham wrote on X Wednesday.

“The capabilities possessed by the United States for such a deep underground attack are unique to us and us alone. Overwhelmingly Americans view the Iran nuclear threat as existential to both the U.S. and Israel,” he said.

Cruz sees a “realistic possibility of a targeted air strike” with the U.S. using the bunker busters against Iran.

This is not a recent fetish. Indeed, Congress has been preparing for this type of strike for quite some time and with uncommon bipartisanship.

Bunker Buster bill stalled in House

Democrat Josh Gottheimer (New Jersey) and Republican Brian Mast (Florida) in March of 2022 co-sponsored the Bunker Buster Bill which sought to:

*Ensure continued U.S. support for Israel in the face of Iran’s continued pursuit of nuclear weapons.

*Require the Department of Defense (DOD) to consult with Israel and report to Congress on Israel’s capability to deter a full range of threats and whether transferring “bunker buster” bombs would advance security for both countries.

*Preserve Israel’s qualitative military edge in the region while reaffirming the credibility of the U.S. military to deter Iran.

“We must prepare for the serious threat of a nuclear-armed Iran when key provisions of the (Obama-engineered Iran) deal expire. That’s why I’m proud to introduce this bipartisan bill to defend Israel from Iran and Hezbollah and reinforce our ally’s qualitative military edge in the region with ‘bunker buster’ munitions. Iran and its terrorist proxies across the region must never be able to threaten the U.S. or Israel with a nuclear weapon,” Gottheimer said then.

The bill never advanced from committee in a Democrat-led House.

Biggs says Trump’s current strategy is working.

“President Trump doesn't need to do more than actually demand that that Iran surrender, give up its nuclear ambitions, and also provide support for Israel, which by the way he’s done,” Biggs said. “He doesn't have to do more than just keep status quo for the United States, because Israel is, quite frankly, handling this horrible mess in the Middle East.”
