Old problem with a new twist: Watchdog groups sue for Qatari funding records

An International Student organization shared its concerns about reports that the Muslim nation of Qatar has invested billions of dollars in United States higher education.

The Jerusalem Post reports Qatar has given or contracted about $6 billion to universities in the U.S. since 2007.

Sophia Witt is Executive Vice President of Students Supporting Israel.

“It isn’t surprising. I feel like we've already known that this was going on, it's just now coming to public fruition. You can look into the pro-Hamas groups on campuses and track their funding, and you can track it back to Qatar, Iran, Saudi Arabia.”

Now watchdog groups are suing the Department of Education for access to Qatar’s contributions, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The Zachor Legal Institute, in conjunction with Judicial Watch, filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the DOE several weeks ago, seeking records related to Doha’s funding and operations at five prestigious American universities: Georgetown, Northwestern, Cornell, Harvard, and the University of Michigan.

The legal action comes after Texas A&M University’s February decision to close its Qatar campus after revelations from a previous lawsuit of nearly half a billion dollars in funding from Qatar hosting the Hamas leadership to the university.

Monetary support means the donors have more leverage over how the universities conduct their business and what they tolerate.

“That’s why a lot of these schools cater to the pro-Hamas narrative. It's also why a lot of them don't shut down encampments right away. They have some kind of moral obligation to the money that's being sourced from Qatar, Iran, etcetera, etcetera,” Witt said.

Witt said this isn't new news, it’s just now becoming public knowledge.

“Hopefully, people, donors, alumni, hold their institutions accountable and take swift action."

She said she thinks parents also should track where family members are going to school.

“Who's actually funding these things? It's dangerous being Jewish or Zionist on campus, Christians are not safe on these campuses. These are terror-funded institutions.”
