First Liberty President Kelly Shackelford says the America 250 Civics Education Coalition was formed because most people do not know the structure of the nation's government and how it operates, so "there's a lot of education that needs to be done."
"The problem is most people aren't taught civics in schools anymore," he says. "A U.S. senator [Virginia Democrat Tim Kaine] a couple of weeks ago showed that he doesn't even know the Declaration of Independence is the very basis of our freedoms."
The coalition consists of First Liberty Institute, America First Policy Institute, and 40 other national and state-based organizations that want to renew patriotism, strengthen civic literacy, and inspire Americans of all ages to understand and cherish our founding principles.
Its mottos is "Know America. Love America."
Shackelford believes the reason students and young adults are drifting into socialism is because they are not being taught the truth about our country.
"This is education of teachers, of parents, of private school, public school, of kindergarten all the way through college," he details. "We're gonna have lecturers that are gonna be speaking at colleges. We're gonna have teacher symposiums. We're gonna have a tour that goes into every state."
He says the curriculum effort will officially get underway in January as America begins to celebrate its 250th anniversary.
